GLOSSARY

Unit of measure (UoM)

What is unit of measure (UoM)?

A unit of measure (UoM) is the unit in which a product's quantity is counted, such as each, case, carton, tray, kilogram, litre or metre. An ERP usually holds a stocking unit and a selling unit for each product, with conversions between them.

Customers and suppliers often use different units from the catalogue: a customer may order in cases what the catalogue sells in singles. A quantity only means something alongside its unit, which is why unit errors are so costly.

Why it matters

A wrong unit of measure ships twelve when one was ordered, or one when twelve were. Invoicing follows the unit, so the error reaches the customer and a credit note follows. Unit mismatches in the item master cause the same error on every order.

How Weeva handles it

Sales Order Automation normalises cases, cartons, trays, singles, kilos, litres and metres to your catalogue's units when it writes the order. It learns each customer's convention per product, and flags a quantity that does not divide into the pack rather than rounding it.
